Whether you are preparing to start college, already studying at college or getting ready for interviews, being able to communicate confidently can make a significant difference.
Academic ability and subject knowledge are important, but there are many situations where you also need to be able to express your ideas clearly, speak confidently in front of others and communicate effectively under pressure.
You may need to give a presentation or contribute to a group project. You may be asked to speak in a tutorial or seminar. You might need to introduce yourself to new people, answer questions without preparation or communicate your experience and abilities during an interview.
These are skills that can be learnt and developed.
This practical one-day workshop focuses on the communication skills students and young adults can use throughout college and as they begin preparing for the workplace.
MANAGING NERVES & BUILDING CONFIDENCE
Understand what happens when we become nervous and learn practical techniques to help manage nerves before presentations, interviews and other speaking situations.
PUBLIC SPEAKING & PRESENTATION SKILLS
Learn how to stand and speak confidently in front of others, structure what you want to say and deliver presentations in a way that keeps your audience engaged.
VOICE & DELIVERY
Learn how pace, volume, emphasis, pauses and vocal variety can make you sound clearer, more confident and more engaging.
BODY LANGUAGE
Explore posture, eye contact, facial expression and gesture and understand how your body language influences the way you are perceived.
THINKING ON YOUR FEET
Develop techniques to help you organise your thoughts and respond when you are asked a question unexpectedly or have little time to prepare.
INTERVIEW SKILLS
Learn how to communicate confidently in an interview, listen carefully to questions, structure your answers and talk about your experience, strengths and achievements without sounding rehearsed.
COMMUNICATING WITH OTHERS
Develop the everyday communication skills needed for college and the workplace, including active listening, contributing to discussions, expressing an opinion clearly and communicating with different types of people.
Communication skills are not something you develop simply by reading about them, so this is a highly practical workshop.
Throughout the day, participants will take part in exercises, presentation practice, interview-style questions and speaking activities with guidance and individual feedback from the tutor.
The emphasis is not on becoming a polished public speaker in one day. It is about giving participants practical techniques they can continue to use and develop in college, interviews and eventually the workplace.
This workshop is suitable for young people who are:
No previous public speaking experience is required.
Please note this is a practical workshop and students will be encouraged to participate throughout the day. All notes will be provided.
